What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are very thin pieces of durable, tooth-shaped porcelain that are custom-made to match the shape and colour of your teeth by a dental laboratory.

Your dentist then bonds the restoration to the front of your natural tooth to help improve the colour and evenness of your smile.

Reasons for Veneers

Veneers can be used for a variety of reasons, including to:

  • Hide Discolouration & Whiten Your Teeth
  • Widen or Lengthen Teeth to Ideal Proportions
  • Add Thickness to Broaden Your Smile
  • Straighten Crooked Teeth

Porcelain Veneers FAQs

  • What are the benefits of veneers?

Dental veneers can provide a natural tooth appearance. The porcelain material is typically well tolerated by gum tissue, highly stain resistant, and can be matched to the natural colour of your teeth.

  • Why choose a veneer over a crown?

Veneers are a conservative option to changing the colour and shape of a tooth. They typically don't require your dentist to shape the natural tooth prior to the procedure like dental crowns do, making them less invasive alternative that is still durable and aesthetically pleasing.

  • Why types of veneers are there?

Dental veneers can be made of porcelain or composite resin.

At Cityview Family Dental Centre, we use porcelain veneers because they tend to resist stains better than those made of resin, and better mimic the translucent appearance of natural teeth.

  • Are porcelain veneers permanent?

Porcelain veneers are not considered permanent since they may have to be replaced at some point. Some patients may never need to replace them at all. They are, however, irreversible.

  • How do I care for porcelain veneers?

You should care for porcelain veneers just as you care for your natural teeth. By practicing good oral hygiene at home and attending regular hygiene appointments at your dental office, veneers can last for many years.

  • Will my insurance cover dental veneers?

Veneers aren't often covered by insurance because they are considered a cosmetic procedure. Talk to your insurance provider and your dentist to determine if any of your treatment may be covered.

Dental Veneers in Ottawa: Our Procedure

Porcelain veneers usually take a least two dental appointments to place.

To begin, your dentist will prepare your teeth by taking away a small amount of your natural tooth enamel to account for the thickness of the veneer. Next, they will take an impression of your teeth which will be used to create your custom veneers.

Once the veneers have been made, your dentist will bond them right to your natural teeth. Made to imitate the translucency of your tooth enamel, they will look and feel just like your own natural teeth.
